The Recovery Group: An online Overeaters Anonymous resource, not just for overeaters

A couple of days ago I wrote about Twelve Step Recovery Resources. The links shared there are for those who may just be beginning to explore recovery and learn about it without already knowing or understanding what their “drug/addiction of choice is.

This is the time of year when people resolve to get healthier, get in shape, lose weight, tone up, slim down, get fit to fit in…

Many have learned to hate their bodies, to hate themselves because of their bodies. Some have a love/hate relationship with food. Others experience Body Dysmorphia, Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, Food Restricting, Laxative Abuse, Exercise Abuse.

Compulsive Eating Disorders are probably undiagnosed, unidentified, unrecognized, and untreated in significant numbers in the United States. Possibly elsewhere as well.

Uncontrollable, out of control, overwhelming thoughts, emotions, compulsions to shovel everything that can be eaten or fast until the mirror’s distorted image stops showing dimples in the skin where dimples shouldn’t go, wrack and rule so many of us. We are ashamed. We hide the evidence of our binges. Others hide the evidence of the food they pretended to eat. Still others experience a paralyzing inability to let food pass their lips and their bodies immediately, automatically, involuntarily eject whatever has been taken in.

Type II Diabetes; Hypoglycemia; Hyperglycemia; Insulin Resistance; Ulcers in the stomach, throat, and mouth; Kidney failure; Dehydration; Heart disease; Stroke; on and on and on the lists go on.

Diets don’t work ~ or not for long. Weight lost finds it’s way back and brings extra friends along for the ride. Weight found soon disappears again. Both are visible no matter how invisible the body’s wearer tries to be.

Sometimes starting in the early childhood of those being cared for by others who learned to restrict or binge at the tables of their forebears.

On and on and on the cycles go: Up, Down, Side to Side, Overweight, Underweight – Nobody’s perfect at the perfect weight.

Come home to OA. Let us love you while you learn to love yourself. Keep coming back until you get your miracle, then stay and share yours with others until they get theirs. Accept. Validate. Love.

Boundaries: No crosstalk – no interrupting, no judging, no feedback, no advice.

  1. Interesting article. It is true that people tend to fall back on bad habits when things don´t go well. Eating food and savouring it can be a pleasant experience, but like in all things in life you have to measure well. A friend of mine used to have an eating disorder, went from obesity to extremely skinny and all the problems that comes with it. For myself I can t say I m a 100% healthy eater but I do put variation in my weekly diet: fish, vegetable, pasta, meat, fruit, etc. I think that it is important not to be radical in what you eat, or at least that´s my humble opinion

      I understand how easy it is to see these things as simply bad habits we’ve fallen into. Which is valid for what those of us in recovery refer to as “normal eaters.”

      However, for those of us who have tried everything under the sun and on the internet to fix ourselves, correct our bad habits, change our thinking, and control our eating or not eating, we are experiencing much deeper and deeply embedded issues, many of which we may not even be aware because the food and the behavior around it grew to be what it was in our lives as early as infancy to cope with abuse, neglect, and severe emotional/physical/psychological trauma.

      Just like many people can go out and enjoy a drink or two on an occasional basis, then put down the glass and walk away without worry, shame, or fear, the Alcoholic has to surround herself with others who are seeking healthy recovery and can relate to, understand, accept, and validate without criticism or judgment.

      These behaviors, disorders, and food addictions are as dangerous and life threatening as cancer because, if left untreated, they can lead to suicide or life-threatening diseases.

      This program is not about the food itself or whatever eating plan defines an individual’s abstinence, it is about the individual’s desperate desire and willingness to WORK the STEPS in order to achieve inner healing, peace, hope, joy, gratitude and release all the things which drive the compulsions.

      • Hey Lillian,absolutely agree with you, at least from my personal experience with people I´ve known their problems we´re not just about the food or the drinks, unfortunately it isn´t that easy! Most of the time there is a deeper damage that has been done due to, at least in the cases I know, circumstances that have past in the past. When I look at these problems here in special they are still too much surrounded by denial and taboo, and consequently exclusion from society. Specialised centers few, and assistance through social organisations even less, especially now as crisis hit Spain hard, they are left even more aparted.

        • Exactly David. What I have discovered in the meeting rooms of various Twelve Step meetings is that this is a program, a community, and practice and proving ground for hurting people to come together and learn how to receive and give the love and acceptance they may never have experienced or allowed themselves to experience. From there they may realize they need more focused professional or medical help. Or they started with professional and medical help and needed a real life place to learn to be in community.

          It’s peer led, peer supported, and peer governed.

      These groups and other online communities, including some on Facebook, have been soul savers for me over the past several years.

      I would be doing the writing I’m doing and I could be the person I’m becoming without the support, encouragement, validation, acceptance, and love people from all over the world have shared with me through their keyboards and screens.


  3. so pleased you have written this. Over eating and binge eating is often forgotten as an eating disorder. I also cover eating disorders on my blog as I am a recovered anorexic. Keep up the good work x

      Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment. So much of the body shaming, food shaming, and behavior shaming that goes on in public and privite, online and off, is attacking and stigmatizing people who are suffering in unimaginable ways, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and it manifests in these ways, as well as in other addictions and compulsive behaviors. We haven’t learned to accept and be okay with ourselves, so we don’t know how to be okay with each other. OA/TRG is a safe place to practice and experience both things.
